Through the years we have had the chance to train hundreds upon hundreds of obedience dogs. Every dog in our training programs must first show proficiency in basic obedience training before advancing into our different training programs.
If you want a well-behaved pet that is fun for the entire family, then our obedience training programs is just what you need! Our obedience training is a program that is available to mid-size and large breeds. We currently do not offer obedience training on toy breeds.
At Zion Kennels, we specialize in training hunting dogs for waterfowl, dove, pheasant and just about any kind of game bird. It is what we are known for. By far, our most popular training package is our Basic Retriever Training package. Our basic retriever training program is the program that most of our clients feel will meet their needs. If you hunt fields, farm ponds, marshes, or shoot most of your birds over decoys where the dog will see the bird fall dead…then there is a good chance our Basic Retriever Training will meet your needs. This dog will de a great family companion with great obedience and be able to handle the above scenarios with ease.
Another thing to keep in mind is that a basic retriever takes half as long to train as an advanced dog. It’s also important to remember that once a dog has completed the Basic Retriever Training program, you can always sign up later for the advanced part of our program. As a general rule, I usually recommend our hunters have their dogs trained through the basic retriever level and then hunt for a season before deciding to advance. Many times owners find this level is completely sufficient for their needs.
Basic Retriever Training includes:
This dog training package gets a dog ready to hunt and able to retrieve any bird it sees fall. And complete a Junior Hunter level in AKC Hunt tests. Training time is estimated at 4-5 months.
Building a strong foundation for any gun dog, especially retrievers, begins with our Baisic Retriever Program. If you want your dog to be above average then our Advanced Retriever Training Program is what you want. Before entering this part of our program it is very important that your dog complete our basic retriever program or come to us with proficiency at the basic level. Once this has been determined then ask yourself these questions.
If you answered yes to 2 or more of these questions then you might consider enrolling in our advanced retriever training program.
The Advanced Retriever will be able to perform all of these Basic Retriever skills as listed above in our basic retriever program at a more polished level along with he following:
The Advanced Retriever Training Package will also include:
Estimated training time is 3-5 months in addition to completion of our Basic Retriever Program. When your dog completes this program they should be able to complete at a Senior Level AKC Hunt Test or UKC Seasoned Level.
This level of training achieves the ultimate hunting retriever so if your wanting a “super star” or want to impress clients, family, or friends with your dog this is the program. Not every dog can obtain this level and will only be accepted after a thorough evaluation.
These dogs have been through the basic and advanced programs and have fine tuned their skills and are prepared to be tested in the AKC and UKC Hunt Test Programs. These dogs will be prepared to compete at a Master National/Grand level.
Dogs in this program will be very efficient in any scenario you can think of. For example, if you have ever been hunting and shot 4 or more birds down and someone in the group shoots their third round and wings one and it coasts out 200 or 300 yards. The bird is wounded so you need to pick it up fast, what do you do? With this level of dog you “no” them off the dead birds and run a blind using hand signals. Once you retrieve the bird the dog will still remember the other dead birds in the field or water and retrieve them.
